Klamath River Renewal Project

The Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) acquired four PacifiCorp hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River—JC Boyle, Copco No. 1, Copco No. 2, and Iron Gate—for the purpose of decommissioning and removing the facilities, restoring formerly inundated lands, and implementing required mitigation measures in compliance with federal, state, and local law.

RMM assisted KRRC in securing the state approvals required to remove the California facilities. Removal of the facilities required approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. For the three dams located in California (Copco No. 1, Copco No. 2, and Iron Gate), KRRC was also required to obtain approval from the California State Water Resources Control Board.

Project Highlights
  • The Klamath River Renewal Project is the largest dam removal effort in U.S. history, restoring a free-flowing river across hundreds of miles.
  • RMM advised on CEQA compliance for this complex regulatory undertaking, integrating dam decommissioning, sediment management, and large-scale habitat restoration.
